Abstract

Stereotypes about gender-based mathematical abilities have an impact on different aspects such as students’ expectations or their ability to achieve mathematical learning. Analyses of mathematics textbooks from various countries around the world showed a more or less marked inequality of representations between female and male characters. The objective of this article was to investigate gender representations in mathematics textbooks used in Quebec with the French-speakers. A manual for the first grade of primary school was analyzed: The illustrated characters were identified and classified according to an analysis grid (gender, associated mathematics activity, space on the page, physical appearance, etc.). The results showed a real desire for gender equality in terms of mathematics aspects, but some gender differences persist (example: physical appearance).

Author Biography

Anne Lafay, Université Savoie Mont Blanc

I am an assistant professor in the Department of Psychology and the Psychology and Neurocognition Laboratory at the Université Savoie Mont Blanc.  I work on the development and learning disorders in mathematics from the perspective of understanding difficulties, identifying children, and effective interventions. From 2017 to 2021, I was a postdoctoral researcher under the supervision of Helena Osana at Concordia University (Montreal). I was a recipient of the Banting Fellowship (SSHRC). From 2012 to 2016, I completed my PhD in Experimental Medicine at the Université Laval (Québec), under the direction of Joël Macoir and Marie-Catherine St-Pierre. My thesis focused on the numerical cognitive deficits involved in developmental dyscalculia. I am also a speech-and-language pathologist (Université Claude Bernard Lyon 1) and I was a member of the Ordre des Orthophonistes et Audiologistes du Québec (OOAQ) from 2016 to 2022. I am also trained in cognitive sciences (Université Lumière Lyon 2) and neuropsychology (Université Pierre Mendès France, Grenoble).
