Abstract
Present theory and practice of thermalling is based on an assumption that the stationary circling is the only way to achieve the maximum rate of climb in an isolated thermal. This paper's main objective is to dispute the generality of this assumption.... A computer program capable of simulating the three-dimensional sailplane flight has been developed and used to assess the possibility of attaining a higher rate of climb by performing 'semi-dynamic' manoeuvers inside a thermal.
