Several accidents have occurred in the UK and elsewhere, in which a towed glider has climbed above the tow-plane, pulling up its tail... Various technical measures to reduce the likelihood of such upsets are mentioned... A more promising approach is a...hook which releases automatically when the vertical component of load at the tail of the tow-plane reaches some pre-determined value.
