Usage of social media tools by Library and information professionals (LIPs) in selected academic libraries in South-west, Nigeria

Abstract

This study was carried out to examine the awareness and use of social media tools by Library and Information Professionals (LIPs) in selected academic libraries in South-west, Nigeria and the challenges they face in the use of social media technologies. Descriptive survey was adopted for this study. The population of the study comprised 217 library and information professionals from 10 selected academic libraries in south-west, Nigeria. A total enumeration technique was used to cover all the library and information professionals, 136 respondents filled and returned the questionnaire, given a response rate of 62.7%. The questionnaire was used as instrument for data collection. Descriptive statistics was used to analyze the data collected. The findings show that majority of LIPs possessed a high level of awareness in the use of social media tools. The study also revealed that social network tools were highly used by LIPs in the academic libraries studied and the types of social media used by LIPs was also revealed. The major challenges faced in the use of social media include inadequate power supply, lack of Internet access and time constraints. The paper recommended that to enhance the use of social media by LIPs, there is need for constant awareness of the importance of social media tools to LIPs and libraries in effective service delivery, LIPs should be ready to learn, unlearn and be learned in the use of social media and University libraries should provide enabling environment such as Internet connectivity, power supply and policy to guide LIPs in social media usage.

Stella Chinnaya Nduka, University of Lagos, Reference Librarian

Stella C. Nduka (Mrs.) is a Librarian at the University of Lagos Library. She holds a Bachelor degree in Education at the Department of Adult Education & Community Development, University of Ibadan and Masters in Library and Information Studies. She is currently a doctoral student at the Department of Library, Archival and Information Studies. She is a Certified Librarian and a member of Nigeria Library Association. Her research interest includes Information and Communication Technology (ICT) deployment and use in library services, innovative technologies, Information and media literacy, preservation of cultural heritages, Library management and gender studies. She has published in leading journals of library and information studies.

Adetoun Elizabeth Adekanye, University of Lagos, Head, Technical Services Department

Adekanye Adetoun Elizabeth is a reader librarian at the University of Lagos Library. She holds a Bachelor degree in Religion and Business Administration from Andrews University, Michigan, USA and Masters in Library Studies at the Department of Library, Archival and Information Studies.She got her doctoral degree from the department of Information Resources Management, Babcock University. Dr Adekanye is a certified librarian and a member of Nigeria Library Association. She is presently the Head of Technical Services Department, University of Lagos Library. Her research areas are library and information studies, gender studies, information behaviour and information and communication technology. She has published widely both in local and international journals

Titilayo Adedokun, University of Lagos, Head, Archive, Newspaper and Special Collections

Dr. (Mrs.) Adedokun Titilayo Oludayo is a Librarian and Head, Archive, Newspaper and Special Collections of the Research and Bibliographic Department (Ghandi Library) in the University of Lagos Library. She obtained PhD degree in Library and Information Science from Babcock University, Ilishan-Remo, Ogun State, Master’s degree in Information Science from the University of Ibadan and B.Tech degree in Computer Science from the Federal University of Technology, Akure, Ondo state, Nigeria. Her research interests include E-learning, Information and Communication Technology (ICT), information literacy, Informatics, library use studies, archiving and electronic records management. She has published in both local and international peer reviewed journals. She is a member of the Nigerian Library Association (NLA) and a Certified Librarian of Nigeria (CLN).
