Abstract

A computer-based welding training system to be used in welding shops has been developed to facilitate and to substantially enhance the basic skills in shielded metal arc welding. The process starts from creating a tool that can capture the skill performance from experts or intermediates into coded knowledge. Then a software tool shows how to transfer knowledge by using the principles of learning feedback. Sixty novices were assigned to use the training system with the T-weld welding position. The results show that they could significantly increase their welding skills after using the feedback in arc length, travel angle and welding speed.

Sakol Teeravarunyou, School of Architecture and Design, King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi

Sakol Teeravarunyou is a lecturer in the School of Architecture and Design at King Mongkut’s University of Technology(KMUTT), Thailand.  His research focuses on the cognitive human factor, learning and interaction design. He chairs the Usability Testing Laboratory at KMUTT. His interdisciplinary research projects explore interactions within and across welding engineering, computer science, ergonomics and design. He finished his Ph.D. from Institute of Design, Illinois Institute of Technology and master degree in interface design from The Ohio State University.

Bovornchok Poopatb, School of Architecture and Design, King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi

Assoc. Prof. Bovornchok Poopat is Head of Department of Production Engineering, Faculty of Engineering at King Mongkut's University of Technology(KMUTT),Thailand. He also serves as Director of KMUTT's Welding Research and Consulting Center (KINGWELD) at KMUTT. His research focuses on welding processes and controls, welding design, welding metallurgy and non-destructive testing. He also holds many international certifications such as International welding engineer, certified welding inspector and ASNT NDT level 3. He finished his Master and PhD. in Welding Engineering from The Ohio State University.
