Abstract

This paper presents a methodology for the selection of project portfolio in maintenance departments. Although project portfolio selection has been widely analysed in the literature, the use of analytical techniques has traditionally been rare in the area of maintenance, and this is consequently a lack of project portfolio selection methodologies and models applied to maintenance departments. Therefore, in this paper a multi-criteria maintenance audit has been designed to evaluate the state of a maintenance department. Additionally, a multi-criteria additive model that uses two types of benefits, internal and external, is applied to select the optimum portfolio. The Taguchi loss function is used to quantify the external benefits of the projects. From the benefit/cost ratio, the resulting efficient frontier with all the possible combinations of projects to implement and the particular conditions in the maintenance department analysed, the project portfolio is selected. The methodology has been applied to the maintenance department of a health-care organisation.
