Abstract

Normally, chemical processing plants work at 95% of their capacity productive. In order to avoid delays or a reduction in their capacity, they develop a strategic plan for the maintenance and replacement of equipment, carried out by means of plant shutdown projects. The success of these will depend on the correct management of the critical factors and the effectiveness of the decisions taken by the responsible team. This paper aims to describe the decision making process, to identify the most critical phases in plant shutdown projects, in addition to establishing the required parameters. This study has been conducted in 53 chemical processing enterprises with 78 experts in this type of project. Results allow to concluded that appropriate decision making in plant shutdowns requires a conceptual base which integrates the different and disperse data available in an organised manner, allowing to consider diverse criteria equally, diminishing conflicts and reducing the uncertainty.
