Fatigue Test of a Sailplane Wing in Carbon-Fibre Reinforced Plastic (CFRP) Construction

Abstract

Series production of sailplanes with application of CFRP in primary structures was started some years ago. Taking advantage of the CFRP-inherent capacities required the definition of admissible design data by the glider industry. This paper presents results of investigations on a wing in CFRP design carried out at the Institut fur Bauweisen und Konstruktionsforschung of the DFVLR in Stuttgart. The aim of the work was to certificate a higher stress level and service life compaied to GFRP. The fatigue tests were run according to a block program commonly used in Germany. After these dynamic loadings, the wing was tested for residual strength. Periodic measurements allowed observation of stiffness behaviour during the simulated service life.
