A critique of two recent sailplane design contests

Abstract


Between September, 1980 and September, 1982 the Soaring Society of America sponsored two sailplane design contests. The author served as chairman for both. This paper describes the background and rationale for both of these contests, discusses the results, and offers some critical commentary on the lessons learned and the prospects for the future.
