Journal History

Technical Soaring (TS) was initiated in 1971 by Dr. Bernie Paiewonski and Col. Floyd Sweet of the Soaring Society of America (SSA), because Soaring magazine had few pages per year for scientific and technical articles and a large number of papers were presented at 1970 OSTIV Congress in Alpine Texas, United States.  The Swiss Aero Club was regularly publishing OSTIV Congress papers in AeroRevue; the OSTIV papers appearing in AeroRevue were published separately by OSTIV as congress proceedings.  In 1985, OSTIV published the last proceedings.  In 1986, the SSA and OSTIV cooperated to edit and publish both SSA and OSTIV articles in TS and TS became the official OSTIV journal.  This cooperation ended in 2006 and OSTIV began editing and publishing TS.  Accordingly, since TS's inception, OSTIV Congress as well as contributed papers have been published and will continue to be published.  TS is the authoritative publication for the science, technology and operations of motor-less aviation (adapted from Paiewonsky and Sweet: TS 23(1), 1999).
