The Third Wave's Final Girl: Buffy the Vampire Slayer

Irene Karras

Abstract

Applying feminist cultural critique to Buffy the Vampire Slayer as an example of a third wave, rather than a postfeminist, heroine, the underlying philosophies of third wave feminism and cultural critique are elaborated upon. The analysis follows an exploration of the third wave's evolution, and an explanation of feminist cultural critique, specifically of action-adventure and horror genres, into which Buffy the character and television program is tied.
