Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
  • The author affirms that the submitted work is an original work and that any third-party or previously published material contained therein has been properly attributed and that permissions have been obtained as necessary. All works used as sources have been correctly cited. The author further affirms that he/she has the right to transfer the copyright of this work to the publisher. All parties listed as authors contributed to the work and all parties who contributed to the work are included and have been informed about the terms of this agreement.
  • The author warrants that the work is not defamatory or otherwise unlawful, does not infringe upon the rights or privacy of others, and is accurate to the best of his/her knowledge. The author accepts that if any part of this statement is untrue, any and all liability related to the publication of this work shall fall to the author and not the publisher.
  • The author warrants that the work has not been previously published, either in print or electronically, except as a marked preprint, and that it is not currently under consideration by any other publisher. The author is entitled to deposit the postprint or published version of the article in an open-access repository provided that the journal is correctly cited as the venue of original publication. If a similar paper or parts of the paper have been previously published in any form, the author will consult with the editorial team prior to submission.
  • Where applicable, the research performed to produce the work was approved by an ethics or institutional review board, and informed consent was obtained from participants.
  • The author has disclosed any potential conflicts of interest, whether real or perceived, related to the publication of this work. Furthermore, the author has acknowledged any and all sources of funding for the completion of the research represented by the work.
  • Where available, URLs for the references have been provided.
  • The journal publishes manuscripts following the citation and reference list format of APA 7th edition. Authors may submit their manuscript in any style guide of choice, with the understanding that if the paper is accepted, they will be required to convert their referencing style to APA.
  • If submitting to a peer-reviewed section of the journal, please make sure the journal is anonymized and ready for a blind review.

Author Guidelines

The Canadian Journal for Studies in Discourse and Writing accepts submissions for the following article types: 

Major articles (9000 words): 

Manuscripts should not exceed 9,000 words (including references and appendix). Please refer to the APA Handbook (7th edition) for style guidelines. Papers submitted as major articles should clearly advance knowledge in Discourse or Writing Studies in any context and/or discipline. We publish theoretical explorations of topics of interest to writing/discourse scholars as well as both quantitative and qualitative research studies. 

Writing in Practice (2000-3000 words) ***New section starting Fall 2020***

These submissions will be short articles describing a strategy for using writing as a pedagogy in higher education. Approaches to “Writing in Practice” articles can be broadly applied. Authors will provide a brief description of a writing assignment or a method of teaching writing, with emphasis on how they are using writing to: 

  • Develop writing voice or disciplinary discourse
  • Teach strategies for applying writing processes
  • Supervise graduate students' theses and dissertations
  • Teach threshold concepts in any substantive area for any discipline
  • Teach about genre or about a particular genre form
  • Teach approaches to research writing and presentation of findings

The articles are intended to be scholarly in nature but use of alternate voices to the academic voice are strongly encouraged. Citations should be limited to no more than 10 as the intent is to present readers with a description of a writing pedagogy that can be replicated within or modified for another learning context. Authors should reflect upon the learning that transpired for the student writer(s). Any author uncertain of the fit of their teaching approach for this article category is welcome to email the editors.

Please submit manuscripts in the following form: 

1. The entire manuscript should be in one electronic file MS Word .docx in the following order: Abstract, body of text, reference list, appendixes. 

2. Tables and Figures should be imbedded within the text of the manuscript in the locations desired by the authors. 

3. Upon initial submission, the manuscript should be blinded to prevent author identification in our double-blind peer review process. References to specific institutions should be avoided.  Blinding of self-citations is only necessary if it would be obvious to readers that the work belongs to the current submitting authors. Author should, when possible, avoid writing statements such as: As we found in our previous work (Mitchell & Zwagerman, 2018).... 

4. If you have any funding sources to acknowledge or other acknowledgements you would like published with the paper, they can be submitted in a separate document along with the manuscript document. Alternatively, you can add your acknowledgements to the manuscript at the stage of its final revision, if accepted for publication. 

5. While the journal publishes its citation and reference list in the style of 7th edition APA, authors may choose on initial submission to submit in the styleguide of their preference. If your paper is accepted for publication, authors will be expected to convert their citations and reference list to 7th edition APA format at that time. The journal does not have the resources to convert papers to APA format on behalf of authors.
