Abstract

Autism spectrum disorder is a neurodevelopmental disorder that particularly affects social and language skills. Many intervention methods have been developed to help individuals with autism cope with these challenges. Some make use of the arts, such as music therapy. This article reviews the literature on music group interventions to examine how they foster social development in children with autism. Six databases were searched and seven articles that met the inclusion criteria were reviewed. The research findings are discussed and future directions are proposed.

Author Biographies

Flavie Bédard-Bruyère, Université Laval

Flavie Bédard-Bruyère holds a bachelor's degree in elementary education and a master's degree in music education. She is currently pursuing doctoral studies in psychopedagogy at Université Laval. Her research aims focus on children with autism spectrum disorders and intellectual disabilities and on music as a tool to support their development. Her master's project has shown that music practiced in a group setting seems to promote social interaction between children and provides a secure context in which their stressful behaviours are expressed to a lesser extent. She hopes to continue in this direction during her doctoral project, where she will evaluate the effects of an informal music program, co-created with young people, on the development of their social participation.

Jonathan Bolduc, Laval University

Jonathan Bolduc holds the Canada Research Chair in music and learning. He is also Full Professor of music education and Chair of the Music Education Program at the Université Laval’s Faculty of Music. He was previously Associate Professor at the Faculty of Education at the University of Ottawa from 2006 to 2013. In 2019, Jonathan Bolduc was distinguished as a member of the Ordre d’excellence en éducation du Québec. The research interests of Professor concern links between music education and academic learning, awakening to music, and the integration of the Orff-Schulwerk approach.

Jean-Philippe Després, Laval University

Jean-Philippe Després (Ph. D.) est professeur à la Faculté de musique de l’Université Laval. Il mène des projets de recherches subventionnés autour des approches inclusives en enseignement-apprentissage de la musique et du développement de matériel pédagogique ludique en musique. Ses recherches ont mené à diverses publications, notamment dans les revues scientifiques British Journal of Learning Disabilities, Frontiers in Education, Research Studies in Music Education, Journal of Research in Music EducationThinking Skills and Creativity, la Revue scientifique en ligne de l’Observatoire interdisciplinaire de création et de recherche en musiqueIntersections : Canadian Journal of Music/Revue canadienne de musique, Les Cahiers de la Société québécoise de recherche en musique et Revista internacional de educación musical. Ses principaux centres d’intérêt sont les approches innovantes et inclusives en pédagogie musicale, la créativité, l’improvisation et l’apprentissage par le jeu.
