[CALL FOR PAPERS] AFRICAN CANADIAN EDUCATIONAL SUCCESS A bilingual special capsule issue of the Canadian Journal of Education

The United Nations declared 2015-2024 the “International Decade for people of African Descent” to emphasize that the international community should strive to uphold the human rights of this distinct group. This decade highlights the achievements and the rights to development of people of African descent, including in the field of education. This bilingual special capsule issue seeks to emphasize programs, initiatives and practices that promote the well-being and academic excellence of African Canadian children, youth, and young adults from early childhood to postsecondary education.

We are particularly interested in original submissions that draw on empirical research with findings that point to practices, resources, programs, and interventions that build upon the strengths, abilities and potential of African Canadian children, youth and young adults.

We are looking for studies that use a range of qualitative, quantitative or mixed-research design including methodologies such as: interviews, focus groups, observation, ethnographies, surveys, census data analysis, experimental, or quasi-experimental studies. We also hope to select articles from a range of disciplines or fields and from various regions to reflect the range of experiences and possibilities across provinces and territories. Our goal is to select articles in English and French from various theoretical perspectives and methodological approaches with a preference for papers that highlight how a particular environment or set of practices fosters and promotes the well-being and academic success of African Canadian students.

Junior and senior academics who wish to contribute to this special issue are invited to prepare an abstract of their paper no longer than 500 words including: a) the title of the article, b) first and last name of each author, c) title (professor, researcher, student), d) institutional affiliation and e) the email of each author. The abstracts must be submitted by February 12th 2020 to Tya Collins tya.collins@umontreal.ca. The guest editors will review these abstracts and contact the authors of proposals that best fit the theme of the special issue to develop and submit a full paper. Full papers will be reviewed by anonymous reviewers and are due by June 3rd 2020.

Submission of proposals deadline (500 words): Wednesday, February 12th 2020
Submission of final papers deadline: Wednesday June 3rd 2020
