Author Biography

Shawn Michael Bullock, Simon Fraser University

My research focuses on the epistemological problem of how we learn from experience, with particular attention to how pre-service and early-career science teachers learn from the problems and tensions they encounter in personal practice.

Schön’s (1983) ideas about the nature of professional knowledge are of particular relevance to my research. I am interested in how problems of learning science, problems of learning to teach science, and problems of learning to teach science using digital technologies interact with one other.

Recently, I have also adopted a historical approach to understanding how professional knowledge is constructed from experience, using the continuing education of Canadian engineers in the 20th century as a case study for analysis.
