Transforming South Carolina by Transforming Children of Poverty

Jim Rex

Abstract

This paper examines South Carolina’s pervasive need for transforming children of poverty through education and Teacher of the Year finalists who have embodied the transformation themselves. The common causes of poverty are reviewed (Young, 2005), and the state’s financial crisis is investigated as it continues to impact education throughout South Carolina.  Education has become a catalyst for children of poverty to overcome the adversity faced coming from low socio-economic backgrounds. In addition, this paper also explores the need for remarkable educators to provide children with the opportunity to experience an exceptional education, which ultimately leads to productive citizens and diminishes the struggle of poverty.
