Author Guidelines

What is The Philanthropist?
The Philanthropist is a quarterly journal (January, April, July, and October) that publishes articles and information of interest and assistance to managers and directors of Canadian charitable organizations and foundations, and their legal and financial directors.

Our Audience
The Philanthropist has a diverse readership consisting of Canadian practitioners in the legal and financial professions, and managers and directors of Canadian charitable organizations and foundations. Although our readers have a common interest in matters concerning philanthropy in Canada, they do not have a common base of knowledge. As such, articles addressing specific aspects of philanthropy (e.g., legal or tax aspects) should be written with a general audience in mind.

What We're Looking For
The Philanthropist encourages the submission of manuscripts dealing with legal, accounting, financial, management, educational, and other policy issues affecting philanthropy in Canada. These include legal and research articles; viewpoint and for-the-record articles; and book reviews.

Articles

Legal and research articles
These articles are based on research and/or analysis of legal cases pertaining to philanthropy in Canada.

  • Manuscripts may be between 7,500 and 15,000 words (including all footnotes and references).
  • All articles must be accompanied by a brief summary (100-125 words), which should also be translated into French. For those who require the service, translations of abstracts can be undertaken by the The Philathropist at a cost of 20 cents per word.
  • All articles must be accompanied by a list of keywords (5 maximum).
  • The Philanthropist does not accept material that has been published elsewhere, except in the case of conference papers that have been made available only to those attending conference.
  • The Philanthropist will undertake to edit conference papers to effect a change from the spoken to the written form, but it is preferred that authors develop their own papers before submission.
  • Authors are responsible for ensuring the accuracy of all citations.
Viewpoint and for-the-record articles
These articles are not based on research, but present information of interest to those active in Canadian philanthropy and contribute to the debate on issues relevant to philanthropy in Canada.

Viewpoint articles offer opinions and "food for thought" to readers (e.g., "Sustainability: Illusion or Reality?" in Volume 17, No. 4).

For-the-Record articles are generally reprinted from other sources (e.g., For the Record: Letter to The Honourable Elinor Caplan, Minister of National Revenue re: Charity and "Political Activities" in Volume 18, No. 4).
  • Manuscripts should be no longer than 7,500 (including all footnotes and references).
  • All articles must be accompanied by a brief summary (100-125 words).
  • All articles must be accompanied by a brief summary (100-125 words), which should also be translated into French. For those who require the service, translations of abstracts can be undertaken by the The Philathropist at a cost of 20 cents per word.
  • All articles must be accompanied by a list of keywords (5 maximum); see examples in keyword index.
Book reviews
The Philanthropist also carries reviews of new books that are of interest to its readers. Book reviewers are normally recruited by the Editor. However, suggestions are welcome. Please email the Editor at: editor@thephilanthropist.ca.

Editorial Policy
  • The editors of The Philanthropist retain the right to edit all material for length, style and grammatical or spelling errors, and to improve clarity. No alteration of meaning or substance will be undertaken without consultation with the author.
