Welcome to the Journal of Microbiology & Biology Education (JMBE). Our history for 10 years has been to publish manuscripts of hypothesis-driven, outcomes-based research focused on teaching and learning. Our unique approach of shepherding authors through the review process has resulted in the addition of numerous, insightful manuscripts to the education literature. Now in our 11th year, JMBE is entering a new and exciting time by becoming an open access journal with international indexing. Our editorial and administrative staff have been diligently preparing for the launch of, what we affectionately are calling, JMBE 2.0. JMBE 2.0 will offer authors a streamlined review process as well as greater visibility and validation of their scholarship.
This 2nd iteration of the Journal has expanded our scope, which began in microbiology, and now branches out to include all aspects of biology education. We have also expanded our coverage of science education to include Perspectives (relating a current societal or educational concern to teaching and learning), Curriculum (sharing innovative, field-tested and assessed classroom and laboratory exercises), Tips and Tools (innovative teaching guidance), Reviews (appraisals of related books and media), and News (current events and calendar), in addition to our original Research publications.
JMBE 2.0 has a couple of other new features as well. The Journal will continue to publish one volume per calendar year, but as two issues (May and December). All aspects of the publication process will be completely on-line. Additionally, the Journal will apply to be indexed in various scholarly databases, permitting searching and citation tracking, as offered by traditional research journals. From submission of a manuscript through publication, potential authors will notice a seamless, integrated processing of the manuscript. Not changing, though, is our commitment to helping authors through review procedure.
I hope you can sense our excitement surrounding JMBE 2.0. Automated processing and indexing of manuscripts will streamline reviews, enhance publication efficiency, and provide greater author visibility. We anticipate a large diversity of ideas, techniques and practices to be shared by colleagues around the globe. The Editors, ASM staff, and I look forward to reviewing your scholarship and working with you in its publication.
For all of us at JMBE 2.0, I am
Sincerely,
