THEME: TACKLING NON-INFECTIOUS DISEASES WITH MEDICINAL PLANTS AND NATURAL PRODUCTS
BACKGROUND

Information on the background of WANNPRES can be found on our website: www.wannpres.org

The Fifth International Conference of WANNPRES (August 6-9, 2012) will focus on Non-infectious Diseases. Non-infectious Diseases are caused from genetics, environmental factors or deficiencies in nutrition. A special Session will also be devoted to Traditional Medical Practitioners presentations.

Research workers in the area of Natural products, Life and Medical Sciences, Social Sciences and humanities are encouraged to submit papers of interest on diabetes, cancer, malnutrition, arterial hypertension, allergies, obesity, mental disorders, reproductive disorders and sickle-cell anaemia etc.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES

This Fifth Scientific Meeting with the theme TACKLING NON-INFECTIOUS DISEASES WITH MEDICINAL PLANTS AND NATURAL PRODUCTS, is aimed at developing best strategies for the education and training needed to advance the development of natural products, especially those used for the treatment of non-infectious diseases such as cancer, diabetes, malnutrition, hypertension. The workshop will also develop a collaborative working relationship with herbal practitioners in West Africa.

The specific objectives are to:

Present and discuss results of original research relating to natural products, especially those used for the treatment or management of non-infectious diseases common in west Africa;
Gather information from those working in the field and obtain a consensus on the critical core of scientists and herbalists active in this area of interest;
Identify areas of research where (more) education and training are needed;
Outline the nature of the education and training required for scientists and Tradititional Medical Practititioners; and;
Identify means of playing advocacy role for excellent working conditions.

EXPECTED OUTPUT

It is expected that at the end of the Scientific Meeting, there would be:

A consensus as to the number of scientists and herbalists that may be considered as forming a critical core to ensure sustainability in any area of natural products research in any laboratory;
A list comprising areas of research where proposals could be developed and submitted for funding for the identified groups;
A document on minimum infrastructural requirements as well as the type of institutional arrangements that would provide a good working environment to enable natural products research scientists give of their best;
A plan for improving the conditions under which natural products research scientists work i.e. group sourcing of scholarships for young scientists from other funding organizations; and,
A report or proceedings containing the results of original research on natural products used for the treatment and or management of non-communicable diseases, especially those of common occurrence in the west African sub-region.
Specific core areas where training are most required for detailed research in African Ethnomedicines will be identified.
